Resetting your Xbox 360 will erase all your personal data saved in the console system. This way, you can make sure no one can misuse your personal data. Resetting your Xbox 360 also means you set it back to the factory settings. Here are the steps to do so.

  1. Scroll to settings on the home screen.
  2. Then, select the system label and select Console Settings.
  3. Scroll down again to the System Info label and select it.
  4. Take notes of the Console Serial Number that appears because you will need it later.
  5. Return to the System Settings menu and then select Storage.
  6. Select the Hardware label that will connect you to your Xbox 360 system.
  7. Once you have entered the Console Serial Number that you noted earlier, your Xbox 360 will automatically do a factory reset.

Resetting Your Xbox 360 Console to Factory Settings

  1. This process will erase all content in your Xbox 360, but it will not remove the limits set by parental controls. If you want to remove the limits, you need to prove to Microsoft that you have the right to do so.
  2. The process of restoring the console to factory settings will delete all stored content. Before proceeding, make sure you have backed up all the content you want to keep.
  3. Press the Guide button on your Xbox controller. This button is the one in the center of the controller and has the Xbox logo.
  4. Select Settings, then select System Settings. You will see different system settings categories.
  5. After that, select Console Settings and click System Info. A new window with a variety of information related to your console will appear.
  6. Back to the System Settings menu and select the Storage option. All storage devices connected to the Xbox 360 will be displayed.
  7. Mark the Xbox 360 hard drive and press the yellow Y button. The Device Options menu for the hard drive will appear.
  8. Choose Format from the Device Options menu.
  9. You will need to confirm deletion of all content on your hard drive. If you are sure that you have backed up all important content, proceed to the next step.
  10. Enter the Console Serial Number if required. Then, delete users. After formatting the console, you will be taken back to the Home menu. You will be signed out of your Xbox Live account, and all games will be deleted. Go to Settings > System > Storage > user’s location, and delete the user.
